A Letter From Kappa Kappa Gamma
Hey Friends!
LSU recruitment is right around the corner and I’m super excited that you are interested!
Recruitment is a unique and amazing experience. By participating and being fully open to the
process you will create lifelong memories and lasting friendships. I treasure my recruitment experience with LSU’s chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. As I share some of what I remember, I hope you will be inspired to think deeply about the next four years and where you want to be.
Growing up I always knew that I wanted to be a part of a Greek community, regardless of which university I attended. A strong sense of sisterhood was instilled within me after attending an all girl’s school in Covington, Louisiana and growing up with three older sisters. With the challenges of moving to a new city to start my college career, I knew Greek Life could offer me a support system in pursuing my goals and aspirations. As president of Kappa I was able to meet leaders of all the Greek organizations and this strong networking system has helped me tremendously.
On the first day of Recruitment, to say I was nervous is an understatement. All summer leading up to Recruitment, I carefully picked out my outfits’ for each round. It did not take long, though, for me to begin feeling right at home.
While sitting in the Union at the PNM Convocation, listening to each sorority’s president recite a blurb they had memorized, I remember how the Kappa President made quite an impression on me. During her presentation she stumbled on her words. Instead of getting embarrassed, she giggled at herself and carried on. Her confidence and lack of self-criticism were quite obvious. I felt reassured and was drawn to her attitude as she showed it is okay to be human and make mistakes. Being that I was a bit overwhelmed during Recruitment and trying my best in all things, Kappa’s President helped remind me that it is important to relax and enjoy the process.
That was my first introduction to the laid back and comfortable atmosphere that I later found when I pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma. Every girl I met throughout Recruitment at Kappa made me feel right at home.
Being a member of Kappa has taught me invaluable life lessons. My Kappa sisters have given and blessed me with their support through thick and thin—these are the girls that I trust completely. Our members’ respect for each person’s individuality makes us more powerful and successful in achieving the numerous goals we set for our chapter. At Kappa, our motto is “Aspire to Be,” which encourages us to reach for the sky when setting goals for the future, and striving to be the best person we can be.
Thinking back to August of 2014, I never would have imagined myself in such an incredible place as I am today. I attribute my membership in Kappa as the catalyst for many of the amazing experiences I have been fortunate enough to have had throughout these past three years of college. The sisterhood events, the countless laughs on the couch watching our favorite show, enjoying meals
together, and many more memories I will cherish forever. The Kappa bond is strong not only in my
pledge class, but my sorority as a whole.
I wish you all nothing but the best throughout your week of Recruitment. I know this can be a very stressful week, and if you find yourself beginning to feel nervous, unsure, or intimidated just remember this: no matter what, be true to yourself. Be guided solely by what your heart and your head tell you and not the opinions of anyone else (even the ones with the best of intentions). Enjoy the experience and believe me when I say this is the beginning of the time of your life!!
